Beware of the Roaring Lion

I want to introduce the devil to you.
Some of you may say, “No need to introduce him to me, Bo. I know him very well. My husband is the devil incarnate.”
But some of you might say, “Uh, Bo, no, thank you. Please don’t introduce him to me. I don’t want to get to know him.”
But you need to—because we are at war.
And you need to know your enemy.
Here’s the first thing you need to know about your enemy: the most important way he tries to destroy your life is by tempting you to sin.

A Holiday Gone Wrong
Last year, Pieter Nortje and his wife celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary by going on a safari in South Africa.
During the trip, Pieter saw a male lion inside a cage. Observing how docile it was, he approached the animal and petted it. When the male lion walked away, a lioness approached Pieter and he petted her, too. Note that she looked like a big kitten—cute and cuddly. Pieter said to the
lion, “Come to daddy, lovely. If you bite me, I will bite you.”
Without any warning, the lioness devoured his arm, her sharp teeth sank in to his bone. Pieter was rushed to the hospital, and because of sepsis or severe infection from his wounds, he was given only twenty-five to fifty percent chance of survival.
Thank God he survived.

An Analogy of Sin
I’m using this story as an analogy of how we get bitten by sin.
First, evil has a way of pretending it’s docile. Evil acts as if it’s cute and cuddly, and so we approach and pet it. We forget there’s a spiritual war aging in the universe.
Second, evil is like sepsis that will spread infection throughout your soul. If you allow one area of your life to be conquered by sin, it will destroy the other areas of your life.
Saint Peter gives us three important steps to fight the enemy: “Stay alert. Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).

Here’s the three-pronged solution against this roaring lion:

  1. Stay alert;
  2. Stand firm; and
  3. Be strong in your faith.
